Prevention of light pollution
Due to the close proximity of the world-renowned Višnjan Observatory, the main technical challenge was to make sure that light did not dissipate into the environment, or interfere with astronomical observations.

Tičan Memorial Park commemorates the suffering of local people in a World War II battle. Massive blocks of Istrian stone feature carved motifs of traditional tools, also symbols of resistance. Monuments are located in a sensitive area, not far from the renowned Višnjan Observatory. To add a new aesthetic dimension to the monuments, a special system of lighting was designed and implemented. It highlights the carved symbols of resistance with precision, while the exceptionally warm shade blends in with the surroundings.

What we did
Due to the close proximity of the world-renowned Višnjan Observatory, the main technical challenge was to make sure that light did not dissipate into the environment, or interfere with astronomical observations.
Instead of the conventional illumination of entire stone blocks, we used projectors that can project precise light shapes. This way, perfect light contours were achieved. Engravings were illuminated with precision, while avoiding unwanted light spill.
As each carved motif has different dimensions, each light beam has a different geometric shape. It illuminates the minimal necessary surface and achieves a pronounced, theatrical effect.
An exceptionally warm, almost orange shade of light (2200 K) was used. That temperature is typically used in nature parks. In this case, it has the least effect on the environment, the night ecosystem and the work of the observatory.
We installed dimmable luminaires which enabled the adjustment of light intensity on-site. This way, maximum aesthetic value was achieved with minimal light consumption.
