About a project
Located at the heart of Bol on the island of Brač, Small Format Gallery houses a valuable art collection of some 300 miniature pieces by leading Croatian painters and sculptors. The lighting project goal was to highlight the exhibits and harmonize their illumination with that of the surrounding space. We used the central element of the space—a glass showcase block—as the key position for achieving the balance of light. The control system enables super-fine controls over each individual lighting fixture.

What we did
Miniature artwork exhibited in the gallery required a greater density of lighting fixtures. We designed a special lighting system that illuminates the miniatures evenly and avoids the light spill. Special effort was also put into the control and adjustment of the optics.
Given the lack of typical mounting points for general lighting fixtures, we had to come up with a solution that would not visually clutter the space. We did it by using the central showcase block, which holds the main source of general lighting.
The challenge was to avoid excessive contrast between the illuminated miniatures and the rest of the room. Uneven lighting could have made some parts of the space appear dark, so we took special care of the contrast.
The system we created allows precision in lighting controls. The light intensity of each fixture can be adjusted, which makes it possible to highlight the miniatures, while having the desired balance in the overall space lighting.
